What are Crowns?

The crown of a tooth is that part which is visible in the mouth. An artificial crown is used to protect and restore a broken, weakend or heavily filled tooth. They are also used to improve the appearance of discoloured teeth.

Crowns are made of many different materials including metals and ceramics.

What will we do?

  • We will shape thr tooth so that, when the artificial crown is fitted, it will be the same size and shape as a normal tooth.
  • Preparation time will depend on how damaged the tooth is and whether it needs to be built up first
  • If the tooth has died or there isn’t enough left to support the crown it may have to be root-fitted first, this is sometimes called ‘removing the nerve’. The crown is sometimes held in place by a peg or post in the root canal if a lot of the tooth is missing.
  • We use a soft mouldalbe material to make an exact impression of what remains of the tooth that is to be crowned and the adjacent teeth.
  • Our Professional dental technician uses the impressions to make the crown.
  • A temporary crown made of plastic or metal is usually put over the tooth until the permanent crown is made. You can chew on a temporery crown but it won’t be as strong as the finished one.
  • When the crown is fitted, we may need to make small adjustments to make sure you can bite comfortably. The crown is tried on and then cemented into place.

What are the benefits?

A crown is strong and can look and feel exactly like a natural tooth. The colour and shape can be matched to your onw teeth.

Depending on the strength of the tooth underneath, a crown can last for many years if you look after your mouth and teeth and the crown is not accidently damaged.

Crowns can also improve you appearance.

Crown Types

Our dental professionals will recommend the best type of crown for your dental restoration needs based on the chewing placement and structure of the tooth or implant that requires protection.

There are three types of crowns. Each type has its own characteristics and qualities:

1.

Zirconium Crowns

One of the most important and most recommended types of the crowns in the recent times. Individuals who want aesthetic artificial teeth for themselves prefer choosing zirconia crowns. Patients often have curiosity regarding the composition or the materials used in the manufacturing of the zirconium crowns.

Zirconium crowns are made up of zirconium oxide or zirconia. Zirconia is a white powdered metal which has the ability to be radiopaque in the X-rays. Also, the tooth colour is whiter than other crown treatment options. Here some of the plus points of the zirconia crowns which makes them stand ahead from the regular and traditional crowns.

There is no anaesthetic grey line visibility compared to that of conventional metal-based ceramic crowns.

2.

E-MAX Crowns

Emax is an all-ceramic system that is based on Lithium disilicate glass, and consists of quartz, lithium dioxide, phosphoroxide, alumina, potassium oxide and trace elements.

Emax based all-ceramic prostheses are rapidly gaining widespread popularity in cosmetic dentistry due to their excellent esthetics, durability, and strength.
The Emax system is mainly indicated for fabrication of crowns and veneers in the anterior region.

Aesthetic look

Zirconium crowns are known to grant an absolutely natural look to the crowns which makes them a favourite of the cosmetic as well as dental patients. Many times, it is difficult to differentiate between the zirconium crowns from the natural teeth. It is recommended to bond the zirconium crowns to the teeth in order to provide a more natural look to the respective teeth.

Biocompatible

The tissues in the mouth happily accept the zirconium crowns. The zirconium crowns start functioning really well within days of the completion of the zirconium crown treatment.

Long life

The life of the zirconium crowns is equal when compared to the regular crowns. The zirconium crowns are known to provide the best service and when well maintained last long time.

Strength

The zirconium crowns have got appreciable strength which can be felt by the patients undergoing the crown treatments.

Less labor intensive

The latest dental technologies can be successfully used in the production of the zirconium crowns. The best part is that lot of natural teeth is preserved which saves a lot of time in the procedure. Only the dentist has to do minimum preparation in order to fit the zirconium crowns on the respective teeth.

Cost effective

Over the long term, Zirconium crowns cost less than the regular crowns including porcelain crowns. The benefits of the zirconium crowns make it desirable for the patients to choose the zirconium crowns over other crowns.

Latest Technology

These crowns are made with CAD-CAM (Computer assisted designing - Computer assisted milling) technology which is the latest in digital dentistry.

Thus, zirconium crowns are of great benefit for the individuals who want to get permanent aesthetic solutions for their damaged teeth. zirconium crowns are one of the best treatment options in the modern times.

3.
